What is your sauna routine and how does sauna improve your life?

I come once a month, although twice would be ideal. My routine begins with the anticipation of the visit! The excitement builds the day following my visit until I return the next month. My day begins with an all-over yoga workout, lunch, shower, then Loyly. I sauna, cold rinse, cleansing tea, sauna, rinse, tea until it’s time for my massage. I’ve tried 3 massage therapists, all wonderful, unique and hugely talented. I have a rose kombucha, read magazines, a light nap, and end it all with the lovely shower products.

Sauna is healing, deeply heating my bones that get so damp and cold in Portland Winters. My memories are revitalized in the warm dark, memories of going to sauna with my Mom before she passed. I continue on with my sister in town now.

It means self-care and love at a primal level.

Löyly was opened with the idea that relaxation should be a regular part of life, not saved up only for big events or stressful times.  Not only is sauna preventative medicine, it is preventative relaxation and peace. We love to see this philosophy in action in the lives of our ongoing guests.

Visiting us since 2014, Darren keeps his regular sauna routine simple: Sauna, rinse, repeat.

What is your sauna routine and how does sauna improve your life?

I try to visit at least twice a week. I like to jump from the steam into the cold shower, then repeat the same process with the sauna.

It’s like hitting the reset button for me. It clears my head and I feel great when I leave.

Today we are profiling Emily, a wonderful person and long-time Löyly Wellness Member.

What is your sauna routine and how does sauna improve your life?

I sauna at least once a month, but often come in more regularly than that when I can. My routine is simple: bathe, breathe, cultivate stillness.

I like to take a cold shower about half way through my first sauna of the session…the feeling of coming back into the warmth is like coming home.

Sauna has made my life so much better. I notice improvement in sleep always; my body feels better and since finding Löyly and saunaing regularly I’m sick way less. It’s also helped me fall in love with and celebrate my body, it’s awesome!

What is your sauna routine and how does sauna improve your life?

I come once a week and usually stay for one hour: shower, dry sauna, cold shower, dry sauna, cold shower, rest:) shower.

And do it all again the following week.

1) I have better immunity, get sick less, and when I do, the symptoms are less debilitating and don’t last long.

2) It’s an opportunity to purify, reflect, meditate, love myself and my body.

3) Deepens my gratitude for life.

Thank you Loyly!

What is your sauna routine and how does sauna improve your life?

I visit Löyly once, maybe twice, a week. I do 3 dry sauna sessions for 10-15 minutes with a 10-minute rest between. After the 2nd session, I apply evanhealy hydrosol + serum – my skin soaks it up! The sauna is a reset for me. No matter what has happened in my week I know that when I leave I will feel mentally and physically refreshed, it cleanses my body and soul. If I miss a week I really feel it, it throws me off balance. My life wouldn’t be the same without Löyly!

How often do you sauna and what is your routine when you visit Loyly?

I try to sauna a minimum of once a week. I usually start in the sauna for 15-20 minutes and then take a cool rinse off. I drink as much water and tea and I can handle, I think we lose more fluids than it seems like during sauna. I take the opportunity to read an essay or short story while I’m cooling off. After my 2nd or 3rd round, sometimes I’ll do a cleansing face mask. I feel best after doing 4 rounds of sauna / cooling.

It took a couple of saunas for me to understand the appeal. I first learned to love sauna at my friend’s house in the country. She has a good, old-fashioned wood-fired sauna and a clawfoot bathtub to cool off in. There is nothing better to me than lying in freezing cold water comfortably, feeling your heart beating throughout your entire body, and looking up at the stars. One of life’s stranger and greatest pleasures, indeed.

How does sauna improve your life?

Sauna is like a restart button for me. I find that things are less of a big deal after a sauna, my coping skills improve. It burns bad moods, negativity and stored-up stress right out of me. I love the slowed-down, contemplative aspect, it’s very meditative. Things that feel overwhelming are somehow less of a big deal after sauna. I feel like I have just gone on a long run, and I always sleep really well. Food tastes better. I am nicer. The benefits for me go on and on…..

Why use the cold shower after a sauna session?

A little bit of water does wonders for your body. Cold water therapy is shown to increase metabolism, enhance immunity, reduce pain, balance sleep cycles and boost mood-improving endorphins. It’s like a wonder drug, without the drug

“This can be attributed to the switching off of the vegetative nervous system as well as the stimulation of the so-called sensitivity centers in the basal areas of the central nervous system. After the warm-cold contrast, the vegetativum switches to the “trophotrope” phase, which is characterized by regeneration and relaxation processes and is accompanied by balancing mood,” explains Prof. Eberhard Conradi.

Cold water after the sauna is one the best wellness programs that exist. In particular during the hot summer months, you should not leave out this enjoyment. If you visit the sauna all year round at least once a week, it regenerates the bodies strength perfectly, it has a lasting effect on the immune system and the body can adapt more efficiently to the summer heat.
